I've got a buddy who is struggling with alcoholism. I never fully understood how bad it was until he showed up to our buddies wedding drunk, and kept getting drinks all weekend even though he was asked to hold it together for one day. I was shocked that even though a few of us (including the groom) had talks with him about not drinking for that one day, and he agreed and said he would keep it together, that he kept getting drinks before, during, and after. Even after he got emotional about fucking up our buddies big day.
A bunch of us had a little chat the morning after the wedding and want to help him, and the idea of an outdoor rehab got thrown out there. He's a big skier and DH mountain biker, so we all thought an outdoors oriented rehab program would fit well. I've looked online a little bit, but haven't seen much, especially in Maine (where he lives). Does anyone have any experience with this type of rehab?
I'd even be interested in any advice people have on helping a good friend through this, as this is the first time I've been so close. Luckily he has acknowledged he has a big problem, and he has a great group of friends that really care about him. I've heard through the grapevine that he tried a rehab center once and went a little nutty, and get the impression he would resist going back. Another big roadblock is that his lifestyle and job don't lend well to rehab.
Anyway, any advice is appreciated. I'm also interested in people's experience/advice on how much you can really push someone to go to rehab vs them wanting to do it on their own, as well as whether or not we have rights to tell his parents about his problem (it sounds like someone tried to approach them before and they were highly offended. I don't know why or what the details are, just another through-the-grapevine thing).
